Two Guys, a Girl and a TV Set

Three college friends out in the world, filling the void with television…and loving it.

More Mad Men…

Posted by Christopher Moltisanti on August 17, 2009

Feeny thinks I need to stop with the Mad Men, but I watched the premiere again and have a few more thoughts:

-Pete and Ken are the perfect pair to face off. For Ken, the self-assured, accomplished guy who’s not terribly invested personally in his job and doesn’t act like he needs this (after all, he was published in The Atlantic), getting promoted is a nice surprise and a fun challenge. Pete, on the other hand, has his entire self-worth caught up in his work, is painfully insecure and bewildered by the possibility of failure. Vincent Kartheiser did some really great work in this episode. Just watch his face when he gets the promotion.

-Don was cheating on Bets the night Sally was born. “It was the middle of the night. I just got home from work…” Oh, Don.

-“She’s taken to your tools like a little lesbian.” Oh, Bets.

-Joan is married, and probably pregnant.

-As my friend Jorczak noted, Don’s “limit your exposure” speech was absolutely brilliant. If you need anyone to keep a secret, Don Draper’s your guy.

Wait, wait, wait. Joan’s already married? I swear, they are too understated with many things, and way too heavy-handed with others (little lesbian, indeed).

Something I noted on a quick rewatch of this scene: when the bellboy comes after Sal, Sal’s pen explodes in his shirt pocket, staining his shirt with ink. Clever, clever writers.
