Review: Crash Course

Posted by CJ Cregg on August 26, 2009

Let me start by saying, I can’t believe I actually watched this.  This obstacle course with cars set in Detroit (I smell a stimulus plan) is a total dead end.  Contestants are paired up into teams with their spouse, friend, or brother/sister and then navigate cars onto moving trucks or skidding across huge shuffle boards to rack up points.  Arguments between driver and passenger are common but boring.  Teams that failed to got the least amount of points or could not get their cars onto the flatbed trucks were eliminated.  Then, contestants played “Car Dominoes” and drove around knocking over precariously perched cars.  The team with the slowest time was eliminated.  In the final “Crash Course,” teams weaved through a slick road, off-road section, and animal crossing section.  A team won and got $50,000 and a gold steering wheel, but I really don’t care who it was.  What a waste of cars and gas.  (If the show had one redeeming feature, it was that the teams ran over huge cardboard animal cutouts during the Crash Course which was mildly humorous.  Cuz they were HUGE.  The cutouts, not the teams.)

While it is a natural follower to Wipeout (the show airs at 8 PM on ABC), this show lacks the heart and has the potential for serious injuries.  The camera shots from inside the cars are kind of scary.  No feel good laughs here.  No laughs at all, really.  The announcing team of Orlando Jones (MadTV) and Dan Cortese, is a dud (no match for John Anderson and John Henson of Wipeout).

Grade: D-

I can’t imagine this show will last very long.  It’s just not as good or as funny as Wipeout.  I didn’t even mean to watch this show.  I just didn’t feel like getting up after Wipeout was over and I ended up watching Crash Course. I want that hour of my life back.

Also during the show, I saw preview for The Middle and Cougar Town.  Both shows look terrible.  And not in a good way.
