New on Thursdays this Fall

Posted by Mr. Feeny on August 29, 2009

Thursday nights should once again be a bonanza of viewership. Some of the most popular shows over the past decade air during these three hours…but the networks have to wondering if their old standards can keep it going. Survivor, CSI, Grey’s Anatomy, The Office, they’ve all been going 5 years or more. So, each network has tried to add some new blood to the lineup. ABC adds the much-talked about Flash Forward at 7, as the CW tries to capitalize on the bloodsucker craze with The Vampire Diaries. NBC replaces My Name is Earl with Community (which will change timeslots in mid-October when 30 Rock returns). And CBS took gamble by moving the top new show from last year, The Mentalist. It now follows CSI…and faces a rather empty timeslot with Private Practice and Leno. FOX also moved its most successful new show, Fringe, to Thursdays.

I’ve got to admit Community looks pretty funny. I don’t know if it will be as good as My Name Is Earl though. It might have been better than as a back to back hour block with both shows.

I never watched Earl, but I agree. Of all the previews I’ve seen, Community seems like it might be the best new show. Certainly the best comedy. The only one I actually laughed at. Here’s hoping the full half hour is as good.

I actually thinking that two hour block is fantastic come October 15th. The Office and 30 Rock are hilarious, and I really enjoyed Parks & Recreation too.

I suspect that COMMUNITY’s pilot will fall flat as most of the jokes are in the preview. However it certainly has the potential (and the cast) to develop.
