Genre: Half-Hour Holiday Special

Posted by CJ Cregg on December 1, 2009

My favorite half-hour holiday special to date

First of all, apologies for posting wrong information.  I thought Prep and Landing was supposed to premiere tonight.  Turns out it’s not premiering until next Tuesday, December 8.

Second, this is the rhetorical critic in me, but I love genres (presidential apologias, farewell addresses, inaugurals).  I also think the concept of genre is useful when discussing TV.  And I’ve mentioned it before.  The Medical Drama.  The sitcom.  You know them.  You love some of them.  Others just don’t do it for you.

So I was thinking about one of my favorite genres, the half-hour holiday special, last week.  And I was

A New Classic?

thinking about the fact that there haven’t been many attempts at creating classic half-hour holiday specials in a long time.  Think about it.  All of the best ones, like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas, are from a very long time ago.  A Charlie Brown Christmas is from 1965!  Likewise, Rudolph is a 1964 creation.  Most of these classics come straight out of the sixties.

And lo and behold.  I was watching some Thanksgiving football, and I saw ads for Disney’s new holiday special to be aired on ABC called Prep and Landing.  The show follows an elite team of elves who prepare houses for Santa’s arrival on Christmas Eve, stealth style.  It features the vocal talents of Sarah Chalke (love her!) and Dave Foley.  And the previews look good.  Actually really good.  It looks funny, the animation is stunningly beautiful, and it seems like it will have a wide appeal, in classic Disney Pixar style.  Jokes for the adults and for the kids.  This one may have staying power.  I’ll look forward to watching next week.  If this is your genre, I’d recommend tuning in.

I just watched “Colbert Christmas” for the first time. That’s a fantastic hour-long special. So enjoyable, with songs and humor and campiness just like the old days. It’s available on Hulu.

Ah yes. Thanks for reminding me. I shall have to watch it to put me in the Christmas mood when I’m done with finals. I do love when Stephen Colbert sings. The song from the special “Another Christmas Song” is available as a free download on the iTunes holiday sampler.
