Name That Show

Posted by Mr. Feeny on April 15, 2010

This television show focuses on the daily life of a large family.

There are three generations, focusing mainly on the middle generation.

One of the parents is played by a famous Emmy winner.

The main sister was the star of her own very popular hour-long show.

Each sibling has their own set of problems, but often work them out with the help of the others.

This is often done via extended conference telephone calls.

The show balances drama and comedy…and soap opera.

Soap opera elements like slow reveals, mystery, deception abound.

Real families don’t go through all these problems at once.

Now, without telling you a network or how long the show has been on the air, you might be thinking of a completely different show than another reader.

That’s because Parenthood is basically the same as Brothers & Sisters.

Go ahead. Read that description over again, but with the other show in mind. It fits, right?

So, why is Parenthood getting tons of critical acclaim while Brothers & Sisters is lagging? Why does Parenthood seem more real and and B&S more cheesy? Most importantly…why is Parenthood a novel concept when ABC’s been doing it for four years?

I ask these questions because I find myself liking Parenthood more than Brothers & Sisters, and I can’t figure out why. I can’t put my finger on it. There’s something about it that appeals more to me. Even though it’s the same show. (Although, admittedly, if they start breaking marriages up like on B&S, then I’m going to have a problem with it).

So, help me out. What separates these shows? Sound off below.

Twenty Years of Parenthood

The Cast of Parenthood

I don’t have time to write a full post right now, but as I was getting ready to leave my apartment, I caught a rerun of the pilot episode of NBC’s Parenthood.  I couldn’t turn it off, even though it was already halfway over and I wasn’t exactly sure what was going on and who the characters were.  It totally sucked me in.  The characters are raw, the emotions are real, and the acting is really quite impressive.  I was totally transfixed by an emotional scene between Lauren Graham and what I take to be her teenage son.

Parenthood is based on a 1989 movie starring Steve Martin.  A TV series based on the movie hit the airwaves in 1990, but it didn’t last very long.  Now, 20 years later, director Ron Howard is at it again, and it seems like he may have something promising on his hands.

If I get the chance to watch the show as it progresses, I’ll keep sharing my thoughts.  Either way, I recommend you tune in.

Especially noteworthy are two of my fave TV actors, Peter Krause (Six Feet Under, Sports Night) and Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls).

Replacing Maura Tierney

Posted by Mr. Feeny on September 11, 2009

The unfortunate news came across the wires yesterday that Maura Tierney’s battle with breast cancer has forced her out of the starring role in NBC’s new drama, Parenthood. Tierney’s been fighting the illness since July and NBC moved back their premiere date to accomodate her. But she decided that it was too much to handle both tasks simultaneously. And production couldn’t be pushed back further. It’s certainly disappointing that we won’t get to see her in another could-be hit show, but certainly her health takes priority. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Parenthood is one of the shows I was most looking forward to this season. I expect great things from it when it finally debuts mid-season…but it certainly will be less enjoyable without Tierney. For a description of the show, look at NBC’s site. It’s basically the peacock’s version of Brothers & Sisters without the big name stars. And, based on previews, without the over-wrought soap opera elements. I enjoy B&S, but it focuses on a well-to-do family with secret affairs and children and…well, basic soap opera stuff. Parenthood seems more realistic, perhaps even a little more wholesome and down-to-earth. And hopefully it will blend drama with comedy as well as Brothers & Sisters does.

So, the question is, who would you cast to replace Tierney? Few actresses have shown their ability to effortlessly switch between comedy (NewsRadio) and drama (ER) as well as Tierney has. Who else could bring that variety to Parenthood as a sister and mother of two? Comment below!
